The International Institue on Ageing, UN-Malta (INIA), collaborated with Ain Shams University in organising a ‘Caregiver Training Programme’, addressed for formal caregivers working with older persons. This programme, was held at Ahmed Shawky Geriatric hospital, Ain Shams University hospitals, Cairo, Egypt.
The aim of the course was to equip caregivers with knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide high quality care for older persons in different care settings and also to prepare new cadre of formal caregivers who are competent to work in geriatric hospital.
This programme addressed the following themes: Introduction to Care giving; communication with older persons; infection control; older persons’ safety; skin and personal care; nutrition and feeding; elimination and toileting; mobility and ambulation; medications and assistive devices use; common medical conditions; self-care and recreational activities and basic documentation and principles of quality. Apart from lectures and discussions, the sessions were presented also through group work, case studies and practise placements.
