INIA worked with the Social Care Standards Authority (SCSA) Malta in organising a training programme in Standards in Residential Homes for Older Persons. This programme which was held at INIA between 12-13 September 2023, was tailor-made for SCSA personnel. The aim of this programme was to enhance the knowledge and understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by older persons when residing in long-term care.
During the programme, INIA’s Director Professor Marvin Formosa, spoke about upholding standards to pushing for future models and possibilities for care homes for older persons. Rosette Farrugia-Bonello, INIA’s Deputy Director spoke about breaking the myths surrounding ageing in later life, and on the rights of older persons in care homes. Christian Vella, INIA’s Senior Research Officer spoke about best practice guidelines in addressing LGBTIQ+ older persons in long-term care facilities. Also lecturing during the programme were two of INIA’s tutors: Professor Charles Scerri and Dr. Christian Borg Xuereb. Professor Scerri spoke about the standards of care for persons living with dementia in long-term care, and Dr. Borg Xuereb spoke about Person-Centred Care for older persons in residential long-term care.
